This week I learned a lot about characterization and point of view within literature. Our class was assigned a project to study different aspects of writing that go into creating a solid piece of literature. My group picked characterization and point of view.
In the past I never really thought about how point of view can really change the feel of a story. I always thought that the author could choose any type of point of view and the story would still go along just fine. Now I know that it really matters! If a story is told from the point of view of a flat character who may be just an onlooker, you are not going to get the same feel for what is going on as you would if a main character was to be telling you the story. I found this really interesting. Along with being able to look deeper into literature, I can take this bit of knowledge and apply it to my own writing.
My group also discovered different types of characters. I have always known there are different types of characters in novels. Not every person can be a main character, while not everyone can just be an onlooker. I like that there are so many different types of characters to choose from because it gives you a variety of ways to tell a story.
There are many other aspects of literature that other groups in my class are researching. I am really excited to find out about what they have learned to better understand how and why pieces of literature are written the way that they are. It will help me understand where the author is going with a story and also help me ponder possibly why the author chose to write the way that they did. I think that the literature project is a good project for AP Literature and Composition students because it helps us understand different stories we are going to be reading and how to apply what we have learned into things such as essays and reflections.
I found the article, Point of View in Literature to be helpful because it explains why point of view is so important. It can make or break a story! The author talks about point of view being one of the most important things an author can decide.
