In class this week we talked quite a bit about our literature project in our project groups. My classmates and I chose to focus on characterization and point of view within pieces of literature and commercial fiction. I was excited to learn more about the different aspects that go into creating a cohesive piece of writing. My group printed out informational chapters from a book talking about characterization and point of view and close read them.
I found the chapter about characterization to be fairly interesting. It talked about all different types of characters and how they shape a story. I took the whole chapter as an influence in how I could better my writing skills. The author explained what different types of characters mean and how they affect a story. I highlighted a lot of the chapter and I am very excited to share my thoughts with my classmates.
In class this week we also discussed the poem, "Cross" by Langston Hughes. We talked about what the poem means and how one or two lines out of a whole poem can completely change the feeling and meaning behind it. I found this to be very true in "Cross" because we discussed how the last two lines turn the poem into a story of self reflection instead of a poem about his parents. Our class sat together and talked about how a line in a poem can change everything and have an influence on our feelings of the piece. I learned that the way you word, symbolize, and present information in a poem is very important. The way you want people to perceive your poem depends a lot on how you present the information and the story you are trying to tell.
I am glad that we are learning more about poetry and looking into deeper meanings behind it. In the past I have not liked poetry as much just because I didn't understand it. I believe that AP Literature and Composition is changing my mind about poetry and helping me to become a more well-rounded English student.
I included a picture of the author of "Cross", Langston Hughes. He relates to what we learned this week because without his thought provoking lines and messages, I would not have learned what I have this week.
